Wedding Venue Possibilities In Memphis

by Mary on August 8, 2010

Right now my main concern is finding a venue for the wedding. We’ve roughly decided on a date based on Kepa’s school schedule, so  I’m trying to find a venue now while I still have the ability to book almost anything I want. (Almost because I’m sure some brides are even more zealous than I am so they may win out on the popular places if they have my date.) Right now I’m very much in the research stage trying to find something that fits our needs.

Ideally we want a place:

  • in Memphis
  • that can accommodate our guest list which will be around 100
  • that isn’t a church
  • that is outdoors or is at least unique
  • that lets us have creative control instead of forcing approved caterers and such
  • that isn’t outrageously expensive
  • that will work with us since we will be out of the country

I’m also leaning toward a place:

  • that can host both ceremony and reception
  • that will provide a beautiful backdrop for photos
  • that will be FUN!

So far I’ve asked my Memphis twitter friends about it and received a few suggestions as well as finding a few of my own online. So far I’ve got a list of venues I need to contact and hopefully scope out this week among all the other things I will be doing.

Memphis Wedding Venue Possibilities:

Brooks Museum of Art

Center for Southern Folklore

Dixon Gallery and Gardens

Memphis Botanical Gardens

Memphis Zoo: Teton Trek or Northwest Passage

Memphis Water Works

Minglewood Hall

Mud Island River Park

National Ornamental Metal Museum

Orpheum

Pink Palace Museum

Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum

City parks? Can you get married in a city park?

I know quite a few of those we will probably be scratching off immediately because of budget (and a few more because they aren’t totally our style).  I haven’t checked any of the costs yet, but I’m sure some of them are quite pricey. But they were all suggested based on the not-a-church-wedding-in-Memphis basis.  I’ll be checking them all out in depth this week and then discussing it with Kepa before making a decision. I wish we could have done it together but time didn’t allow it in this case.

I’m really hoping we can find someplace awesome for the wedding. And if not, maybe someone in Memphis will loan us a backyard? Because I’d really even be okay with that!

We are getting married in a city park and having the reception at the Community Center next door. The community center was really inexpensive and the park is free! We are free to use whatever catering and alcohol we choose.

My only suggestion is to be sure you have a back-up ceremony site in case of inclement weather. Should this weather NOT cool off come September 4th, we’ll have the ceremony inside the community center.

Another tip I’ve learned in this year of wedding planning, don’t be afraid to haggle with prices. See what you can get for a lower price. The worst thing they can say is no.

Good luck! I’m excited to see where you guys choose.

That’s a great idea Lisa. I’m completely terrified of planning something and then having to use a rain plan. Are you sure I can’t arrange for perfect weather?

I will bring/use my mom for haggling prices. She is waaaay better at it than I am. ;)

Well, if you are good with Mother Nature, will you give her two requests to make! I would love for September 4, 2010 to be a rain, free, no humidity, beautiful day for my wedding! :)

It has been so blasted hot here in KY this year, that I’m more worried about my guests (and me in my 900 pound dress) melting! We’re going to set the reception area up to work for the ceremony, if needed.

On sex in the city, miranda got married in a city park, so I would say yes, altho that was a tv show and this is real life. However, I DID always used to see weddings in boston gardens and boston commons when I lived in boston. But just the ceremony, not the party after. The art museum would be such a cool place to get married! And the other ones too. I guess it would be hard to choose because there are so many beautiful places weddings could happen. Does it rain a lot in memphis?
