Since I’ve been talking a lot lately about paper flowers as a possibility for the wedding, I decided to try out another form of paper flower.
Mexican tissue paper flowers!
I already knew I wanted some hanging tissue paper pom-poms, a decorating staple at many weddings that you see online. I love those little hanging balls of tissue paper so much. They bring color and joy into any environment they are put in.
So in addition to the pom poms that I’m already pretty set on having, I thought why not try out tissue paper for making flowers too?
Here is my first attempt at a bouquet, which took me maybe ten minutes and cost less than a dollar.
And yes, that is a pink pom pom hanging from the railing in the background. I was experimenting with those too. :)
I’m not sure how I feel about the tissue paper flowers. On one hand they are very cheap, super colorful and customizeable, something I can make myself, originally a Mexican art form for Cinco De Mayo (which I love), and again, very cheap. On the other hand they are tissue paper flowers which would not work well in any kind of bad weather, they aren’t fresh flowers which I do love, and some people will inevitably think they are tacky (or is that just a thing in the online wedding planning world where every other woman says the word tacky when talking about other brides? I can’t tell anymore). It’s a split. I like them but there are some cons to think about too.
What say you? You know how indecisive I am about these kinds of things. Give me your honest opinion. Should I use tissue paper flowers? And pompoms? Lots of color and fun = more bang for my buck, or bad idea?

I’m not sure I like that particular color combination, but I love the tissue paper flowers in general.
Haha. It’s what I had at the time. ;)
I love them. I used real flowers for the bride and bridesmaids only. Everything else was either fake or paper. Even still the cost was ridiculous (I used a florist because I didn’t have time to make the bouquets).
I say save money wherever you can, and a homemade touch will always beat a store-bought one, even in flowers. We were going to do tissue paper flowers but we literally ran out of time.
I just laughed at the tacky thing. I’ll admit though that after my wedding, I started looking at weddings I attend differently and definitely have developed some strong opinions on what is tacky. I think the tissue paper flowers and balls could work depending on your space and other decorations. I liked the paper flowers from the book more (or the idea of doing them from your old emails) — did you ever attempt to make those?
I haven’t tried to make them yet because I just don’t have the materials. I need paper with words! But the only thing about those paper flowers is that they lack color. I LOVE COLOR and I feel like somehow it’s starting to turn into a grey/black/white classy affair that just isn’t me. I need color.
My sister had her low-key wedding earlier this year and she had a flax bouquet – similar to these (a green one) http://keepsakebouquets.co.nz/Flax-Flowers.htm
Keeps forever and looked very cool.
Her fiancee and her also wove several hundred mini flax flowers for the table decorations – no cost because they just used the flax growing in the back yard. Little piece of NZ for your wedding…. :)
