Right now several couples I know are planning weddings. It’s so exciting! I love weddings!
In the mix there are couples taking their time with planning and some getting things done asap. From 3 weeks to 18 months the range is kind of fascinating to me. Amazing weddings can be planned in any amount of time so it really comes down to what works best for the couple. We gave ourselves a lot of extra time for wedding planning which worked to our advantage being an international couple.
Since I’m curious and trying to get an idea of what is average…
How long did it take to plan your wedding?

It took us 6 months to plan everything from start to finish. I can’t imagine doing it in 3 weeks!
We were engaged for 364 days, but I had started planning it a few months before knowing we were going to get engaged – so I had a lot of my ideas already so the actual planning didn’t take as long. We booked the venue, minister and photographer within the first 2 months, then there was this long, long lull before we could a lot more. But I liked that we were able to look at venues in the time period that we were going to get married versus picking it out in October for a spring wedding.
We got engaged in February. By the end of April, I had everything booked, and we are getting married abroad (so I had just one trip over there to meet suppliers).
I have since bought THE dress, bridesmaid dresses and sent out the save the dates too and we’re not getting married for another 16 months. Our date is very popular (NYE) so I didnt want to take chances being left with what others didnt want! We actually could be getting married this year if it wasnt for the money!
We got engaged in June 2011 and have been planning ever since. Giving ourselves that much time, though, has changed things significantly. We went from a standard (though still small) wedding down to immediately family only, down to an elopement, and then back up to immediate-immediate family (parents, one set of siblings and one set of friends doubling as photographers) only. And we moved it up two months, gave everyone two weeks’ notice and will be married on August 24 in a civil ceremony. Hooray!
